I bought a CD today
It’s kind of odd
There’s hardly anywhere to play them now
I just love
The tactile feel
Feeding it to my stereo
I love the whirring
And clicking
As the disc starts to spin
I love the clarity
Of the music
That brings me to another place
Today I drove 2 hours
To watch a friend
Run 13 miles
I hadn’t seen him
In months
But it was like it’d been yesterday
The energy was infectious
When he crossed the finish line
And saw the sign I’d made
I got brunch with his family
And we waited
For about an hour for our table
A man played music
On the patio area
And he was selling CDs
I was enjoying the music
I was enjoying the day even more
For 15 dollars
I bought a time capsule
To open as often as I’d like
As long as I have something to play it on
This is inspired by a trip I made last Spring to watch my friend run a half marathon in a town a couple hours away. He and his wife live probably 7 hours from us, so I leapt at the opportunity to see them since they’d be close. I made a sign and showed up just in time for him to cross the finish line, and we all went out for brunch after.
There we got to listen to a local artist while we waited for a table, and I was really enjoying the music. I decided to go up and buy a CD because that’s been one of my favorite things to get as a way to remember an event or concert when possible. Something about listening to music without the internet or my phone has become really nice for me. This week I was listening to that album again and thinking of my day trip to reunite with my friend. There’s something so potent about memories that are stored by music and kept on something physical like a CD.
I hope you enjoyed this exhibit in the Every Day Museum of Art! I love sharing everyday art that can be enjoyed by anyone, so I hope this encourages you to be creative today! If you’re new, I hope you stick around to see the art that we discuss here every week as well as the Everyday Art posts where I feature other artists and writers from around Substack. If you want to be featured, send me your art!
Also, I have recently finished my own book! It’s called Pumpkins in the Forest, and it’s a cozy fiction book about Autumn and the beauty we see around us in everyday life. If you want to keep up with the process, I’m giving weekly updates for paid subscribers (only $5/month!), and a paid subscription comes with a 30% discount for the book and in the Etsy shop. A paid subscription now also includes a free art or film photo print mailed to you every month!
